Week Ahead: 2.12 to 2.17

The quote from Calvin Coolidge was talked about during Jason Kelce's interview after his Eagles won the Super Bowl last weekend. Kelce was a walkon football player at the University of Cincinnati. His story is one of persistence in the face of challenges, trials and some of life's big questions.

This week again showed us how persistence is a quality worth pursuing. The idea of Pressing On has been our theme throughout this season. Again we find that Pressing On in the face of fear and questions about God's plan and direction. We continue to pray for persistence for Jonah following his accident and we continue to pray for persistence for Dirk as he battles his disease.

As we finish up our dual meet season after having just gone through senior night, the idea of Pressing On in persistence is one that I hope propels all of us forward, especially as our seniors face their next steps.

However, if we persist on our own knowledge and strength, we are doomed to fall short of our full potential. Christ persisted through His mission on our behalf. It is only through His strength that there is anything hope to persist through the most difficult questions and trials in life.

Ready for Taper?
During the next two weeks swimmers (Those not qualified for state) begin the taper portion of the season. Taper is that time of the year when workouts change. Yardage decreases while intensity and speed increase with the intent of preparing and "resting" the body for the championship portion of the season. If you want a little more detail about taper, here is a nice little article that explains it well.

Swimmers who choose to should have tights to wear at practice beginning Wednesday the 14th. This is not a requirement and may seem counter-intuitive when trying to rest muscles, etc., but I know what has worked for many of my athletes in the past. I suggest tights that are nylon and footless (hemmed at the ankle), not heavy "winter" tights. Tights are used to enhance drag during taper but heavy winter tights provide too much drag. The footless tights don't unravel during the two weeks or so of swimming with them on.
