The Week in Review and Exam Week Ahead - 1/16

THE WEEK IN REVIEW

Though Thursday's meet did not end with the score that we wanted and didn't have the dramatic time drops that we saw on Saturday, we still saw 20 season best in our meet against Otsego. Included in that were some impressive improvements by Ryan Hulst in the IM and Caleb Bol in the Back and an outstanding performance by Shane Lonergan on the board with a great life time best (Dirk just missed his by 3 points or so).

Nathan Vance had a great swim in the 200, dropping 3 seconds while stopping to contemplate if he had done a 200 or only a 150. It was a 150. Those times of inopportune hesitation happen to all of us, we just don't have a stopwatch timing how much time we waste during that hesitation.

Sometimes I have to follow Nathan's lead and force myself take a moment to figure out where I am. Today, my pause helped remind me how blessed I am to have a great group of athletes and a supportive parent group behind them. Thanks for that and all of the work you parents put in.

My pause also reminded me of my role as a coach. One of the beauties of coaching as a Christian in a Christian environment is that our main focus isn't the score, or the time, but the use of the gifts God has given us as a way to praise the giver of all good gifts. Don't get me wrong, I like to win, and I expect the athletes on this team to push themselves to maximize those gifts in practice and in competition. But in the end, what they do in the pool is not what defines them. What defines them is who they are as young men, and who they are in Christ.

MEET SPLITS

EXAM WEEK
With exams this week, we are limited to two hours each day. You are still expected to be at practices. Practices will run from 3:30 and be done promptly at 5:30 for the swimmers. No Morning Practices this week.

During exams your school days are shorter, so use that time off as study time. I know that this week can be very stressful, but the time in the pool is a great break from the books and the extra exercise will help your brain think clearer.

We do have a home meet on that Thursday. Again, make sure you use the time after exams as a great time to study.

This Week's Meets

  • Thursday, Jan. 19th Home Meet vs. Muskegon Mona Shores - Athletes should be on deck at the Aquatic Center by 5:20.

  • Next Week
We are off from School on the 23rd I have to arrange practice time with the Aquatic Center. Please stay tuned to details for practice that day.
