WHY>HOW>WHAT
As a team, we have been talking a lot about our WHYS, HOWS and WHATS for this season. The idea of this is from a book called 'Start With Why' by Simon Sinek (if you've never read it it is highly suggested). We are using these as our goals for the year and are really focusing on going from Why (the belief, the reason we do what we do), to HOW (the actions we take to realize that belief), to WHAT (the results of those actions).
So instead of a goal being just 'I want to qualify for state in the 50 free with 25.69' we are taking a more process over product approach and asking 'HOW am I going to achieve a 25.69 in my 50 Free?'. The answer could be things like, having tight streamlines on all my walls, giving it my all on every set in practice, not breathing off my turns, getting off the block quick...things like that.
What we've done to make this more of a focus at meets is asked the girls to find out their teammates 'hows' and watch for those things during their races rather than just the end time or score.
Athletes of the Meet
Here is how it works. The girls nominate 4 of their teammates focusing on their 'hows', coaches then decide from those 4 & the reasons given who the two athletes will be. When selected they will be given a fun swim cap or a cute diving board key chain, be highlighted here and on social media.
Our first nominations were SPOT on with what we envisioned this to look like.
So without further ado, this weeks Athletes of the Meet.
Lauren Plockmeyer
Lauren implemented her hows well last night by pointing her toes and having strong legs on every dive. To quote her teammate, "She killed it!"
Samara Brink
Although she was bummed about her first race she didn't let it get her down, she danced it out (legit...she danced it out in the locker room) and came back ready to take on her 100 fly and boy did she!
Congrats Lauren & Samara!
